    Description:Methyl 3-(hydroxymethyl)benzoate is an efficient, selective and scalable formylation agent that can be used to formylate a wide range of alcohols. It has been shown to be an excellent formylating agent for the synthesis of chloral, acetone, and other phenols. This compound is also notably useful in the preparation of anhydrous methyl 3-formylbenzoate which can be used as a precursor for other biologically active compounds. Methyl 3-(hydroxymethyl)benzoate is synthesized by reacting a hydroxymethyl group with benzoyl chloride or benzaldehyde. This reaction occurs at temperatures between -78°C and 20°C, with yields ranging from 70% to 95%.
