- l-Myrtenol
Myrtenol is a natural phenolic compound found in plants. It has been shown to have anti-oxidative effects and inhibit the growth of micro-organisms such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Staphylococcus aureus. Myrtenol has also been shown to be useful for treating chronic arthritis and mouse hippocampal cells with oxygenated fatty acids. The mechanism of action for myrtenol is not well understood, but it may be due to its ability to bind to fatty acids, which are important components of bacterial cell membranes.
Myrtenol can be synthesized by an asymmetric synthesis reaction starting from the chiral building block (-)-menthol. This synthetic route involves the formation of an oxetane ring through the condensation of two molecules of acetone followed by hydrolysis.
