Methysticin is an organic compound that is a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial function. It has been shown to inhibit the production of ATP and to cause neuronal death in vitro. Methysticin also interacts with various drugs, such as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). The interactions between methysticin and 5-HT were examined using a rat liver microsomal assay. Methysticin has significant interactions with other drugs, including anticonvulsants, antiarrhythmics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anxiolytics. It can also cause toxicity in animals and humans when used for long periods of time or at high doses.
