4-Methylmercapto benzoic acid is a molecule that can be found in urine samples. It is a functional theory that the molecule has UV absorption at wavelengths of 280 nm and is able to bind to metal surfaces. This molecule is also hydroxylated by the enzyme hippuric acid, which binds to it, preventing its excretion in urine. The compound 4-methylmercapto benzoic acid is not present in plants, but it can be synthesized from glucosinolates. 4-Methylmercapto benzoic acid is transported across membranes by passive diffusion and has been shown to have an excretion rate of 0.7% per hour. The solute concentration of human urine is 1 Molar and the solute concentration of plant tissue is 10 Molar.
