Methyl 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzoate (MCNB) is a structural analog of the benzimidazole drug, trypanocidal activity. It has been shown to be effective against mouse macrophages in vitro studies, and is more potent than biphenyl. MCNB has also been shown to inhibit the enzyme epimerase, which converts N-methylpyridinium to N-methylpiperidinium. This inhibition may lead to increased cytotoxic effect of MCNB on T. brucei epimastigotes.
