7-Methylcoumarin is an inhibitor of protease activity. It is a derivative of coumarin, which belongs to the group of antimicrobial agents. The inhibitory properties of 7-methylcoumarin are due to its ability to react with the active site on the enzyme, which prevents it from binding to proteins and inhibiting protein synthesis. This compound has been shown to be effective against inflammatory bowel disease and bowel disease in animal studies. 7-Methylcoumarin has been shown to have a ph optimum of 6.5, which makes it more potent at that pH level. Light exposure can cause this compound's potency to decrease by as much as 30%.
