mPEG4-SH is an optical stabilizer that has a thiolate group, which enhances the photostability of proteins. It is also a prodrug, which can be converted to its active form by hydrolysis. The active form of mPEG4-SH is glycyrrhetinic acid, which is an inhibitor of the enzyme acid phosphatase. This drug has been shown to have high affinity for ligands with acidic ph values and to be insoluble in water and organic solvents. It has also been shown that mPEG4-SH interacts with mesoporous silica and imine groups on metal surfaces.
