The magainins are cyclic peptides that form a class of antimicrobial peptides. They act by disrupting the integrity of the cytoplasmic membrane, leading to bacterial cell death. Magainin 2 is a member of this class of peptides and has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against several types of cancer cells in culture. It also has an acidic pH, which may allow it to cross through the lipid bilayer of membranes and disrupt their integrity. The magainin family is able to inhibit the growth of many different types of bacteria, including those that cause infectious diseases such as anthrax and tuberculosis. In addition, they have been shown to be effective against multidrug-resistant strains such as MRSA. Magainin 2 has also demonstrated antibacterial efficacy in human serum model systems and in vitro studies with polymyxin B.
