(-)-Maackiain is a natural compound that belongs to the group of enzyme inhibitors. It inhibits the activity of protein kinases by binding to the ATP-binding site on their catalytic domain. (-)-Maackiain has been shown to have antiangiogenic properties and inhibit tumor growth in animal models. (-)-Maackiain also causes apoptosis through a variety of mechanisms, including inhibition of protein synthesis and DNA synthesis. The drug binds to receptors on cells, which leads to downstream signalling cascades and cell death.
The pharmacokinetic properties of (-)-maackiain have been investigated in rat liver microsomes, showing that it is metabolized by CYP450 enzymes and excreted via the bile into the intestinal tract. This compound may be used as an adjuvant therapy for allergic symptoms due to its ability to inhibit histamine release from mast cells in vitro.
