1-Methoxy-2-propanol is a solvent with a high viscosity. It is used in analytical chemistry to dissolve organic compounds and as a reaction medium for chemical reactions. This solvent is used in the preparation of Covid-19, an experimental antiviral drug. The Covid-19 process begins with the conversion of 1-methoxy-2-propanol to methoxyacetone using sodium carbonate and cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1). Methoxyacetone is then converted to glycol ethers by methyl ethyl ketone in a reaction catalyzed by an enzyme called methyl ethyl ketone oxime reductase (MEKOR). The glycol ethers are then converted to Covid-19 through the use of FTIR spectroscopy and kinetic energy.
