N-Methyl-4-nitrophthalimide is a synthetic compound that is used in the manufacture of polymers. It reacts with tetraphenylchloride to produce a polymer and has been shown to have a reaction yield of up to 97%. N-Methyl-4-nitrophthalimide can be used as an alternative to toxic compounds such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid and ammonium nitrate. The synthesis of this compound involves the reaction of amines, quaternary ammonium salts, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The first step in the synthesis is the dehydration of nitroethane. This then reacts with methylamine, followed by condensation with methyl chloroformate and finally hydrolysis.
