2-Methylbenzoxazole is a nucleophilic compound that reacts with chloride to produce an aromatic hydroxyacetophenone. This reaction is exothermic, and the heat of reaction can be used as a bio-energy source. 2-Methylbenzoxazole has been shown to inhibit human ovarian carcinoma cells in vitro, which may be due to its inhibitory effect on the production of DNA. It also inhibits the growth of bacteria such as S. aureus and E. coli, which are responsible for causing a number of diseases including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, septicemia, or meningitis. The mechanism by which 2-Methylbenzoxazole inhibits bacterial growth is not clear; however, it may be due to inhibition of protein synthesis or cell division by blocking deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis or inhibiting the activity of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes.
