Methanesulfonic acid 2-fluoroethyl ester (MFE) is a lead compound that is being investigated as a possible drug candidate for the treatment of cancer. MFE inhibits the activity of a transporter protein that is responsible for transporting spiroindolines out of cells. It has been shown to cross-link DNA, which may be an important step in the development of cancer drugs. MFE has also been shown to inhibit the growth of L1210 leukemia cells and benzopyrene-induced lung tumors in mice. MFE belongs to the group of sulfonates and n-substituted compounds and has both positron emission and electron transport properties.
