4-Nitrobenzonitrile is an organic compound that has been identified as a potential precursor to the explosive RDX. It can be synthesized by nitration of benzene with nitric acid, followed by reduction of the nitro group with hydrogen chloride. 4-Nitrobenzonitrile is soluble in organic solvents such as ethers and chloroform. It has three functional groups: aryl halide, nitro, and ester. It is a colorless solid that has a boiling point of 204 °C. IR spectra show that it has four absorption bands at 1710 cm−1, 1595 cm−1, 1225 cm−1, and 1085 cm−1. The chemical shifts for these bands are indicative of the presence of electron-withdrawing substituents on the aromatic ring (e.g., chlorine). Nitrogen NMR spectra show signals at δ 2.5 ppm and δ 3.
