Neogambogic acid is a polyene antibiotic compound that inhibits bacterial DNA polymerase and is active against bowel disease. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of dinucleotide phosphate (NDP) in vitro, which may contribute to its apoptotic activity. Neogambogic acid also has autophagic effects and can inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to neuronal death. This drug also binds to human serum albumin and has anti-infectious properties, including the ability to prevent infection by Helicobacter pylori. Neogambogic acid is synthesized from two disulfide bonds between two molecules of gambogenin A.
