3-(2-Nitro-1-phenylethyl)-1H-indole is a pyridinium ion that is used as a reagent in organic chemistry to introduce the nitro group into compounds. It can be synthesized by reacting chloride with pyridine and 1,2-dichloroethane. 3-(2-Nitro-1-phenylethyl)-1H-indole is also used for evaluating the operational effectiveness of chlorination. It has been found to be more selective for chlorination than other reagents such as cyanuric acid or ammonium dichromate. 3-(2-Nitro-1-phenylethyl)-1H-indole is not reactive towards other functional groups.
