4-(4-Nitrobenzyl)morpholine (4NBM) is a dioxane that is used as an efficient method for the synthesis of sorafenib. This compound has been shown to be cytotoxic to cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, and has been identified as a promising anticancer drug candidate. 4NBM's cytotoxicity may be due to its ability to bind with amines in the cancer cell's DNA, preventing the formation of hydrogen bonds between nucleobases. The crystal structure of this compound consists of a benzene ring substituted at positions 2, 3, and 5 by nitro groups. The molecule also contains two methoxy groups at positions 1 and 4. 4NBM has been found to have antiviral activity against HIV-1, herpes simplex virus type 1, and human cytomegalovirus.
