Nevirapine-d4 is a fluorinated derivative of nevirapine. It is used as a component of an active antiretroviral therapy to treat HIV infection. Nevirapine-d4 is taken up by cells in the infected person's body and inhibits the production of new viruses. Nevirapine-d4 has been shown to be effective against HIV-1 and HIV-2, as well as other viruses such as herpes simplex virus type 2, cytomegalovirus, human T-lymphotropic virus type 1, and human papillomavirus types 16 and 18. The efficacy of nevirapine-d4 against these viruses has been studied using optical imaging techniques that allow for direct visualization of viral replication in living cells.
