Nitrofurazone is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the enzyme nitrite reductase, thereby preventing the conversion of nitrite ions into nitrous oxide. The resistance of mutants to this drug is conferred by a single amino acid substitution in the enzyme target. This mutation results in a loss of function in the enzyme. Nitrofurazone is used for treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. It has also been used as an ointment for treatment of human skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Nitrofurazone may be toxic to humans, but its use is not generally restricted because it does not cause cancer or mutations in DNA.
