This drug inhibits the production of adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) by inhibiting the enzyme dinucleotide phosphate (NADH) reductase, which is involved in oxidative phosphorylation. 1-Nitropropane also inhibits the enzyme activities of cytochrome P450 and aldehyde oxidase, which are involved in detoxification of nitroalkanes. In addition, 1-nitropropane prevents DNA synthesis by inhibiting topoisomerases I and II. Nitropropane has been shown to be genotoxic to mammalian cells and can cause oxidative damage to DNA.
