5-Nitro-1,2-dihydroacenaphthylene is a nitrated aromatic hydrocarbon that is used in the preparation of polyvinyl chloride. It has been shown to be genotoxic and carcinogenic in mice. The mechanism of this toxicity involves the formation of nitrosamines, which are mutagenic and carcinogenic. 5-Nitro-1,2-dihydroacenaphthylene also produces benzalkonium chloride (BAC), which is a disinfectant that can cause genotoxic effects. Benzalkonium chloride is emitted from polymer films during the process of polymerization.
