It has been shown to have minimal toxicity in animal models and is an effective inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme beta-lactamase. Norstictic acid also has anion radical scavenging properties and can be used as a model system to study the mode of action of other antimicrobial agents. Norstictic acid binds to benzalkonium chloride, which inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
