6-O-[2-(4-Nitrophenyl)ethyl]-2-[(3-pyridyl)pyrrolidin-1- yl]-2’-deoxyinosine is a novel antiviral and anticancer agent that belongs to the class of nucleosides. It is a monophosphate and diphosphate analog of deoxyinosine, which has been modified with a 2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl group at the 6 position. This modification prevents phosphorylation by kinases, which inhibits DNA synthesis. The nitro group in 6-O-[2-(4-Nitrophenyl)ethyl]-2-[(3-pyridyl)pyrrolidin-1- yl]-2’-deoxyinosine provides an additional mechanism for inhibiting DNA synthesis by interacting with the DNA minor groove and preventing the binding of DNA polymerase.
