It has two isomers, 1-nitroanthraquinone and 2-nitroanthraquinone. 1-Nitroanthraquinone can be synthesized by reacting sodium sulfide with an aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of acid catalyst. The reaction can be carried out efficiently in a particle reactor or a solution reactor. After the reaction, impurities such as water vapor and aliphatic hydrocarbons are removed by distillation or extraction, respectively.
