Description

Nystatin is a polyene macrolide antibiotic that inhibits the growth of fungi by binding to sterols in the cell membrane, thereby preventing the synthesis of ergosterol. It can also be used as an antifungal agent for topical use on skin or nails. Nystatin has been shown to have a molecular structure consisting of a lactone ring with one oxygen atom and two hydroxyl groups. The molecule is composed of an intramolecular hydrogen bond, which stabilizes its conformation and prevents it from functioning as an acid. This drug may cause allergic reactions in some patients due to its acidic properties.
