Nitazoxanide is a prodrug that is converted to the active form, nitazoxanide triacetate, in the stomach. It inhibits the growth of infectious agents by preventing their synthesis of DNA, RNA, or protein. Nitazoxanide has been shown to be effective against persistent strains of influenza A (H1N1) and A (H3N2) as well as rotavirus. It also has been shown to have a low toxicity profile in human clinical trials. Nitazoxanide is not an anti-inflammatory agent and does not inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes. The drug can potentially be used for treatment of cancer due to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential, which may lead to cell death.
