Nitrilotris(methylene) triphosphonic acid (NTMTA) is an inhibitor of bacterial growth. It has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent and is used as a co-biocide in wastewater treatment. NTMTA binds to metal hydroxides, forming a complex that inhibits the growth of bacteria. NTMTA has also been shown to inhibit the production of hydrogen peroxide by inhibiting enzymes such as xanthine oxidase and myeloperoxidase. A Langmuir adsorption isotherm was used to measure the binding affinity between NTMTA and metal hydroxides and found that the inhibition of bacterial growth was due to protonation of the NTMTAs. The pH at which this occurs is dependent on the type of metal hydroxide being studied, with sodium salts causing a pH shift from 8 to 9, while potassium salts cause a shift from 10 to 11.
