2-Nitrophenyl diphenylamine (2NPD) is a nitro compound with a nitrogen atom. 2NPD can be used as an electron donor for organic synthesis and has been extensively used in the study of the interaction between nitro compounds and other molecules. The ground state geometry of 2NPD was calculated using quantum chemical methods, which showed that the molecule has one planar configuration with four axial bonds and two equatorial bonds. It can form a resonance structure through interactions between the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom and the π* orbital on the carbon atom. This resonance structure gives rise to two possible geometries, both of which are linearly symmetric. Substituent effects on 2NPD have been studied by comparing its spectroscopic properties with those of methoxy substituted 2NPD. Methoxy substitution has been shown to reduce the frequency of vibration and alter some vibrational modes, as well as affect electronic properties such as ionization
