p-Nitrophenyl formate is a supramolecular compound that has been used as a model protein to study protein synthesis. It is an acylation reaction product of p-nitrophenol and formic acid, which can be synthesized in the laboratory by heating p-nitrophenol with formic acid. p-Nitrophenyl formate binds to messenger RNA (mRNA) and inhibits translation of the mRNA into proteins. This leads to decreased bacterial growth and inhibition of cell division. p-Nitrophenyl formate also has hydrogen bonding properties that make it useful for immobilization purposes. The compound is unsymmetrical, which makes it difficult to synthesize using traditional methods, but can be made using the Fischer esterification reaction.
