2-Nitroisophthalic acid is an organic compound that is a member of the class of alkanoic acids. It has been shown to inhibit the matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break down collagen, elastin, and other components of the extracellular matrix. 2-Nitroisophthalic acid has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in animal models. 2-Nitroisophthalic acid inhibits the activity of matrix metalloproteinases and prevents their proteolytic activity on the extracellular matrix by inhibiting their binding with zinc ions. This inhibition leads to a decrease in inflammation and tissue damage. The crystal structure of 2-nitroisophthalic acid shows that it forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules, which is important for its anti-inflammatory properties. Matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors can be used for treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn's disease.
