2-Nitro-4-cymene (2NC) is an organic chloride that is used as a chemical solvent. 2NC has the ability to reduce other molecules, such as ketones, alcohols, and amines, with the release of hydrogen chloride gas. It is also used in pharmaceutical preparations and as a reagent in stereoisomeric studies. The nitrate ion can be reduced by 2NC to produce nitric oxide, which may have some medical uses. The reaction rate of 2NC can be increased by alkali metals or by adding solvents such as trifluoromethanesulphonate or water. 2NC is most commonly used as an analytical sensor for detecting ammonia and chlorine gas.
