m-Nitrotoluene is a nitro compound that is used as an intermediate in the production of dinitrotoluene. It has been shown to be toxic to mice, causing liver lesions and weight loss. The toxicity of m-nitrotoluene may be due to its ability to inhibit the reaction mechanism that involves methanol solvent and α subunit, which are required for the conversion of methanol into formaldehyde. This inhibition leads to clinical pathology in mice and toxicity studies in rats. The odorant binding properties of m-nitrotoluene have also been studied using analytical methods such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Nitro compounds are often used in wastewater treatment for removal of organic matter from water samples. One study found that m-nitrotoluene was able to remove up to 46% of organic carbon from wastewater samples after only two hours.
