(-)-Norgestrel is a synthetic steroid that is used as a contraceptive. It binds to the plasma proteins and has high affinity binding to the enzyme activities in the human body. The drug also shows stereoselective binding to human liver nuclear receptors. Norgestrel is metabolized by hydrolysis of ester bonds by plasma esterases into its active form, norethindrone. This process takes place in the liver and therefore does not involve hepatic microsomal enzymes. Norgestrel has been shown to be effective for women with heart disease and for those who are at risk of developing it. It also has been shown to have a protective effect on brain cells from damage caused by nitroprusside and acetylcholine during strokes or heart attacks.
