4-Nitrobenzyl acetate is an organic acid that is used in animal feed supplements. It can be used as a phase-transfer agent, which helps to increase the solubility of calcium carbonate and other minerals in water. 4-Nitrobenzyl acetate is also used to synthesize gymnemic acid, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. The functional groups on this molecule are important for its reactivity with various compounds. Acetylation of 4-nitrobenzyl acetate can lead to the formation of nitrobenzaldehyde, which can then be converted into an anhydrous sodium salt by reacting with sodium hydroxide. This conversion will yield a white solid with a characteristic odor.
