It is an acidic acceptor and has been used as an agrochemical to inhibit nitrification in soil. 6-Nitroindoline has been shown to be mutagenic, which may be due to its ability to form covalent bonds with DNA bases or alkylate DNA bases. 6-Nitroindoline can also undergo borohydride reduction, which is the conversion of a compound into a more reduced form by reaction with borohydride.
