6-Nitro-4-chromanone (6NCA) is a solvent that is used in the synthesis of chlorochromenes. It has been shown to be labile and can react with reactive halides at room temperature. 6NCA is also a fluorescent compound that has demonstrated fluorescence quantum yields of up to 10%. The microenvironment around the molecule affects its fluorescence properties, which may be due to the presence of other molecules such as phosphines or other solvents. 6NCA reacts with hydrogen gas in the presence of palladium catalysts to form an alcohol, which can be dehydrogenated to give aldehydes and ketones. This reaction has been shown to have potential for use in organic synthesis.
