4-Nitro-3-picoline (NPP) is a colorless liquid that has an intramolecular hydrogen bond. It reacts with water to form the corresponding nitrate, which is a strong oxidizer. 4-Nitro-3-picoline has been shown to have optical properties that are sensitive to changes in pH and temperature. This compound also has dipole, n-oxide, and hydroxyl functional groups that can be used for chemical reactions. 4-Nitro-3-picoline is a type species of 5-azaindole and can be used as a precursor in the synthesis of other compounds such as dyes.
