Neurosporene is a phytoene, a type of carotenoid. It can be found in the human serum and can be produced by the reaction between lycopene and hydroxyl group. Neurosporene has been shown to have a protective effect against congestive heart disease. The reaction mechanism is not well-understood, but it may be due to its ability to stimulate the production of nitric oxide.
