3-Nitrobenzophenone is a nitro compound that has been shown to undergo UV irradiation, which causes its conversion to a carbanion. This reaction proceeds with the elimination of a proton and the formation of a carbonyl group. The carbonyl group then reacts with another molecule of 3-nitrobenzophenone in an entropic transfer reaction to form the two products. Analysis of this product has shown it to be chiral, with an R configuration at the hydroxyl group and an S configuration at the carbonyl group. It also has a copper salt as well as a hydroxyl and carbonyl groups.
3-Nitrobenzophenone can be synthesized by reacting malonate with nitric acid in the presence of copper(II) sulfate. This reaction produces 3-nitrobenzoic acid, which is oxidized using hydrogen peroxide to yield 3-nitrobenzophenone
