3-Nitroacetanilide is a molecule that is found in the testes. It is a structural analog of acetanilide and has been shown to have similar biological function as acetanilide in inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. 3-Nitroacetanilide has been shown to inhibit the production of prostaglandin E2 by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme activity.
3-Nitroacetanilide is synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with an acetamide derivative, such as ethanolamine or acetamide hydrochloride, in the presence of sodium carbonate and anhydrous sodium. The reaction takes place in a model system at pH 8.0 and room temperature. A cycle analysis identifies the number of steps necessary for this reaction to take place.
