4-Nitrohippuric acid is a metabolite of the amino acid glycine, which is converted to 4-nitrohippuric acid by nitroreductase. It is an aromatic compound that has been shown to have high affinity for tissues such as kidney and liver. 4-Nitrohippuric acid can be used as an ion-exchange reagent for the separation of peptide hormones from plasma or urine. The kinetic constants of 4-nitrohippuric acid have been determined in rat studies. This compound has also been used to measure the rate of hydrolysis of hippurate in human urine samples. The optical properties of this compound have not yet been fully characterized for its use in spectroscopic applications.
