Octafluoronaphthalene is a fluorinated naphthalene. It is an x-ray crystallographic structure that has been shown to undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions with sodium carbonate. The reaction mechanism for this process involves the formation of a palladium-catalyzed coupling product, which then reacts with the octafluoronaphthalene substrate. Octafluoronaphthalene can be detected by UV absorption at about 300 nm and fluorescence emission at about 350 nm. The detection sensitivity of octafluoronaphthalene is high because it has a long lifetime in solution and its fluorescence is not quenched by boron nitride or hydroxyl groups on other molecules. Octafluoronaphthalene binds to receptors that are hydrophobic in nature due to the presence of a nonpolar hydroxyl group and a cyclopentene oxide side chain. This chemical has also been shown to have transport
