Description:

n-Octylpolyoxyethylene (n-OPEO) is a synthetic surfactant that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to be effective against a wide variety of bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Staphylococcus aureus. The mechanism by which n-OPEO exerts its antibacterial efficacy is not yet fully understood. It may inhibit the growth of bacteria by disrupting their cell membranes, or it may interfere with the synthesis of proteins needed for bacterial growth.

It has also been shown to be active against viruses, such as HIV, herpes simplex virus type 1 and influenza A virus. n-OPEO binds to the active site serine on the surface of these viruses, preventing them from replicating and infecting other cells. In addition, n-OPEO has been shown to possess antiviral activity against Ebola virus in vitro.
