Oleuroside is a bioactive phenolic compound found in olive leaf extract. It has cytosolic Ca2+-elevating effects, tissue culture and physiological effects on energy metabolism, antioxidative properties, and subcritical water extraction. It also has been shown to decrease ATP levels and symptoms of coronary heart diseases in rats. Oleuroside has been shown to have antioxidant properties by scavenging reactive oxygen species in vitro and in vivo. It also inhibits lipid peroxidation by decreasing the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in vitro and in vivo. This compound is able to inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol with high potency as well as inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species by activated macrophages.
