Description:

Octopamine is a neurotransmitter that belongs to the group of monoamines. It is found in high levels in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. Octopamine has been shown to activate 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors, which are involved in locomotor activity and regulation of mood. The effects of octopamine on the central nervous system are mediated by its interaction with 2-adrenergic receptors. It also activates ryanodine receptors, which regulate the release of calcium from intracellular stores. Octopamine has been shown to have a variety of physiological effects, including increased heart rate, appetite suppression, and sleepiness. These effects are due to its ability to inhibit dopamine β-hydroxylase and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). This drug may be used as a pharmacological treatment for diseases such as Parkinson's disease or depression.
