Product Information
5-Oxoheptanoic acid is a chiral oxocarboxylic acid that has been synthesized as an analogue of heptenoic acid. It is a synthetic molecule that binds to the active site of HMG-CoA reductase, inhibiting its activity. 5-Oxoheptanoic acid also inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids. When this compound is treated with benzyloxymethyl chloride in the presence of magnesium, it forms a lactam ring by reacting with the double bond between carbons 7 and 8. The anion formed in this reaction can be deprotonated to form a carbanion, which can react with chloride to form a chloroalkylation product.
