17-Oxo dexamethasone is a mixture of 17-hydroxy-6,7-dihydro-17α-methylpregna-1,4,9(11)-triene-3,20-dione and its 3β,5β stereoisomers. It is an oxidation product of dexamethasone that may be formed during the synthesis or storage of this drug. The impurity has been identified by high resolution mass spectrometry. A potent anti tuberculosis drug belonging to the class of rifamycins Rifapentine inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA dependent RNA polymerase, thereby preventing transcription and replication. This active form is metabolized through a number of metabolic transformations including hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase or conjugation with glucuronic acid.
