Oxycodone is a synthetic opioid used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain. It is the most potent of the naturally occurring opiates and has a low potency in comparison to other opioids, such as morphine. Oxycodone is available as a single agent, but also in combination preparations with paracetamol or ibuprofen for relief of moderate-to-severe pain. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, itching and sweating. Oxycodone has been shown to have significant drug interactions with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and may be associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Evidence suggests that oxycodone can decrease platelet aggregation by inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity and prolong bleeding time by interfering with platelet function through inhibition of thromboxane A2 synthesis.
