This compound is an alkaloid found in the roots of leguminous plants of Sophora genus. It has a range of pharmacological effects and acts as anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic and anti-cancer agent. Oxymatrine has anti-proliferative and anti-angiogenic properties since it inhibits the growth of pancreatic cancer cells and the expression of angiogenesis-associated factors VEGF and NF-κB. It has been also reported that the compound attenuates memory impairment and amyloid-induced neurotoxicity in neuronal cells.
