Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane is a liquid with low viscosity and high lubricity. It is also water-repellent and can be used in the treatment of wastewater. The main application of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane is as a component in silicone oil emulsions to provide lubrication for textile machines, bearings, and gears.

Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane can be used to treat bacterial strains resistant to fatty acid synthesis inhibitors. This chemical may have an effect on the cell membrane by binding to the receptor binding site on the cell surface or by interacting with the fatty acid synthesis enzyme complex.
